KIRKPATRICK, STANTON JOIN FRESHMEN IN STRONG DEMOCRATIC HOUSE CLASS Originally published at Cronkite News
WASHINGTON - Arizona's two newest members of Congress joined more than 50 other newly elected Democrats for freshmen orientation in Washington Tuesday as Democrats increased their hold on House seats in the Congress that will be sworn in this January. Former Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton and two-time former Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick will also be part of a state delegation that shifted form majority Republican to majority Democrat in last week's elections, evidence in the words of one expert that Arizona is shifting to a "solid purple" state. But Stanton was more focused on bipartisanship Tuesday, the first day of two weeks of freshman orientation, saying he is eager to work on gun control and immigration reform among other issues and "can't wait to get started to do my part to advance America."
